NPR News Presents Mom's Good Move
Airing on All Things Considered October 24-26, 2000

Davis, CA--This year Peg Collison moved from her home of almost 35 years, into a retirement community. She left the town of San Mateo, California and moved two hours away to Davis. This was a difficult transition for Peg, her family and the friends she left behind. Her son, radio producer Dan Collison, gave his mom a tape recorder and asked her to record her move. As part of the National Public Radio® (NPR®) News series, The Changing Face of America, Peg and Dan Collison tell their story, Mom's Good Move, airing on NPR's All Things Considered®, October 24,25,26.

In part one, on Tuesday October 24, Peg Collison tells her three adult children why she wants to make the move. Unlike some seniors, Peg Collison planned for her future. She saved and took out long range health insurance. Still, this decision stirs a lot of emotions for her and her family.

In part two of Mom's Good Move, airing Wednesday October 25, Peg Collison begins the difficult process of "downsizing"--deciding what to keep, what to give to the children and what to toss out. She and her children find an array of memories---some joyful and some painful.

In the final segment of this series, airing Thursday October 26, Peg Collison makes the move. Her new home is an apartment in a retirement community in Davis, California. The move is sad for everyone. But in spite of her children's fears, they realize their mom has made a good move.
